Surf Team Tryouts

Tryout dates: September 5th and September 7th (these dates may change depending on swell, water quality, etc.)

REMINDER: YOU NEED TO BE CLEARED WITH A PHYSICAL PRIOR TO TRYOUTS.  Here is a link with directions: http://www.danahillsathletics.com/athleticclearance

DO NOT PUT SURF TEAM AS YOUR FIRST PERIOD.

There is a mandatory lunch meeting on the first Friday of the school year in Room 706. Students will be reminded about this meeting via the school's morning announcements and flyers posted around campus.

Surf team members will have one week, from Friday’s meeting, to complete their physicals/athletic clearance and hold harmless forms. These must be completed and returned to the coach before tryouts. There is also a requested $10 donation for each student to tryout. This donation pays for the three tryout/competition judges. Judges are experienced, many of whom judge for armature surf competition associations.

There are two days of tryouts. The judges’ scores for each day are combined for a two day total. The head coach and assistant coach take into account the judges’ scores, contest/tryout conditions, and previous contest results.

Previous contest results from NSSA or other amateur contests help to demonstrate a surfer’s past experience in surf competitions. Some surfers are excellent free surfers, but struggle to surf well in a contest format. We need competitive surfers.

Surfers will tryout in a 15 minute heat with six surfers in each heat.

Surfers can tryout/compete in multiple categories.

Tryouts are held at Creek Point (Salt Creek). Our competitions are held at Creek Point so that’s where we have tryouts. Not Middles. Not Gravels. Point.

How many make the team?

The Dana Hills’ Surf Team consists of roughly, 15 male shortboarders, 4-6 female surfers, 4-6 bodyboarders, and 4-6 male longboarders. The team fluctuates in size from 30-36 team members.

Surf Class Information:

Surf class is only available second semester.

The class consists of current surf team members, minus the seniors who are dropped from the 1st period class. Because the competitive season is over, they no longer need to practice with the team.

Spaces for the surf class are limited. The class cannot exceed 36 students per our OC Parks permit.

I will post the number of open positions to this webpage.

Spots will be filled on a first-come first-served basis.
